MontrealI was in Montreal for a few weeks last March, and here are some pictures from a day off.I took a bus from our hotel at the airport and then got on a train to downtown. On the night before I saw a TV program about the botanic garden, so I headed there first. As you can see, there was a little bit of snow and ice out there. The sky was blue, but the wind was bitterly cold Inside the greenhouses the air was warm and humid. I don't know how they managed to keep such a temperature difference! I had heard that the facility was one of the largest gardens in the world, but of course most of it was under 4 feet of snow. I just stuck to the interior displays. The main attraction was a butterfly exhibit that included this room full of butterflies. The plants in the room were some of the best butterfly attractors, and the staff had put out lots of plates of fruit for them. The orchids were great, as could be expected from such a place. After a few hours in the tropical conditions of the greenhouses, it was back out into the cruel bitter springtime weather. My next stop was at the McCord Museum to learn about all things Canadian. The first picture is of a work of art that had moving parts. The second is of the predecessor to the unicycle, the penny farthing. Having learned all about the exploits of Canadians of now and long ago, it was back to the hotel. I had a lot of studying to do! |
